Scorching.

Freezing.

Soaking.

Dead.

“Broo,” came the whispered voice. It sounded lovely, soft and gentle. I wanted to rest in it, bask in it.

A poke to the ribs and I curled inward. “Broo.” That voice was sharp and mean. I didn’t like it and swatted in its general direction.

“Broomhilda. You wake up this instant.” A forceful voice. I didn’t like it either, but before I could shoo it away, I found myself flung onto the hardwood floor of my bedroom. I woke with a start and a bump on the back of my head.

“Ow…” I whined as I sat up. “What the hell?”

On the other side of my bed stood Amir, Bethilda, and Baba Yaga. “We needed you to stop.”

“Stop what? I was asleep. How could I do anything?”

The wand hovered at my shoulder and waved an end toward the window where Bethilda had pulled a sheer panel back. Outside the glass, sleet and fire battled in the sky. “What the fuck?”

“You were dreaming. Tossing and turning. Whatever you were dreaming about, your emotions manifested in some rather drastic weather changes.”

“No, shit. Talk about climate change,” I muttered as I got to my feet and wandered over to get a better look. “How do I stop it?”

“It’ll cease on its own now that you’re awake. What were you dreaming about?”

“I… I don’t know.” I nodded my head at the events taking place outside. “This is what I saw though. Except there was rain also. And death. I don’t know whose death. It clung to me. I couldn’t escape it.” I looked at Bethilda. “Does it mean something?”

“Other than you can’t control your emotions and powers in your sleep?” Baba Yaga quipped and I rounded on her.

“Look, Lady… You seriously need some help. You’re head isn’t screwed on right. Neon pink and orange do not go together. Not unless we’re in a timewarp back to nineteen eighty-four. Which I’m pretty sure we’re not. But I’m only here because of you and you’re the reason the warlocks from hell are coming back.”

“We don’t know what’s going to happen, yet.”

“Other than someone is likely going to clean my guts and blood off the walls downstairs.”

“Dramatic, much? We don’t know that will happen and we don’t know that it won’t. What we do know is that they want you. If I’d left you in New York, you wouldn’t have had protection or others there to fight with you. Here, you do. Maybe I should’ve sent you to the pokey as a consequence and punishment for humans witnessing your powers.”

“There’s magic jail?”

“There is,” Bethilda said. “You don’t want to go.” She forced a shiver and I smirked. I wasn’t going to defend myself to anyone. They all knew my story, so there wasn’t much point to me adding unimportant details.

“And by the way, that wand? I’m not giving the wand to the warlocks, either. It ran from them, too. If they kill me, so be it. But that wand carries a part of my mother
